The Top 10 Tips for recruiting a team

Like Fabio Capello (the new England football manager for anybody that doesn't know!!), you need to put a new team together. There are of course many things to think about -here are 10 top tips for bringing this team together:

1. Find the best and then hire them. Don’t employ people who just ‘happen to be available at the time,’ find the best you can find and can afford - absolutely critical for your key positions!

2. Never hire just because you have to. This is a hard one to accept - you have only seen 'average' candidates so far, but you need somebody on board asap. Whatever you do, don't recruit the one you don't want - just because they are the best of the average candidates it still only means you are going to hire an average person. Don't forget you want the best - stick to it. It will take a little longer but will be worth it in the end (and save you a fortune!)

3. Recruit for the future – not just the present. If you want your business to grow and develop, you need good people who will grow with your business and not be left behind, so look ahead and consider future needs as well.

4. Remember you won't recruit the 100% person. And you don't want to either! You need the person to have 75-80% of the role, but you need to allow them to grow, develop and push that extra 20%. If you don't de-motivation and boredom will kick in.

5. Select candidates against Core Company Competencies. Work out the key core competencies of the role before you start the process, and decide a minimum fit. The simple rule here is stick to it and resist the temptation to go for that 'gut reaction'.

6. Get your employment contracts in order. Don't ever recruit anyone without having a fully up-to-date Employment Contract to offer your chosen candidates, written for your company by a employment law specialist. Litigation could cost you dear otherwise!!

7. References, references, references. Whatever you do, do not fail to take up the references for any new employee.Take several 'careful' verbal references to establish past performance and successes (candidates have been known to tell the odd lie now and again!).

8. Induct your new staff well. Contrary to what is believed, new starters enjoy comprehensive induction programmes, especially in large complex organisations. Don't assume anything, tell them everything.

9. Keep it up. (sorry another football comment!). Remember you have recruited a 75/80% fit so you need to keep training and further developing your new employees - don't stop or they will!

10. You won't get it right every time. Not all the people you hire will do as you expected. You may well recruit for a future role but find out they are not able, but that happens. Remember what they are good at though, and help find in another role in the company if they want a move. Better to retain the good talent in your company, even if it isn't in you team!!
